The richest people in the world, the United States, and New York, are beyond our imagination, even though Korea is rich. And the money and time they spend renovating their houses and apartments are beyond their imagination.

It is said that it usually takes two years to fix a luxury apartment building in Manhattan. The construction starts on Memorial Day (May 27) in the U.S. and ends on Labor Day (the first Monday in September), while the landlord goes on vacation to a vacation home in Hampton or New England. The construction costs are also easily transferred from several billion won (about 9.4 million U.S. dollars) to 10 billion won (about 9.8 million dollars) in Korean money.

It is quick to think of Renaissance kings and aristocrats in order to understand them. Did they find expensive furniture stores or sample collections of famous designers when decorating their castles? No. They wanted designs that were out of this world. The richest people in Manhattan are no different. What they want is not just pretty and "luxury" interiors, but open-mouth interiors that customers have never seen anywhere else.

Anyone can design, but not many people can actually create it. Mark Ellison, the author of this book, is the one who can do it.

The problem is that the rich are the ones who insist on making the impossible possible because they will spend their money. A young architect who designed the penthouse was tasked with renovating it made an absurd drawing. The design was made of irregular patterns on the deck floor protruding outside the apartment, grass was planted in the cracks, and the stream crossed it. The "stream" was pumped to flow, and pebbles from Colorado were laid far away on the floor.

The problem is that in the hot summer, all the grass has died, and the pebbles under the stream are filled with green algae. The claim that "in this situation, let's change the design" against the rich does not work. We have invited top experts without sparing money to make the impossible possible. Eventually, the worker washed and disinfected the stones one by one, and the company that worked on the swimming pool and the outdoor pond was called to find out how to prevent algae from occurring. The company created and installed a device that could balance the pH of the water, mobilize chlorine drugs, and control it.

The next day, however, the site was filled with green algae again. When the Colorado pebbles were told that they should never be thrown away, the worker took out, cleaned, and disinfected all the stones. If a swimming pool company cannot solve the algae problem, it must change the design, but if the rich want, it must find a way to realize the design.

So to find a way to get rid of the algae, I even called engineers, botanists, ecologists to have a meeting.. This is how rich Manhattan people spend their money. The story behind it is in this article. (This is a full disclosure, so anyone can read it.)

It was a book that I introduced in the Otter Letter last year, and a Korean translation came out this time. This is a really, really interesting book.
