Why did she kill herself.
She committed suicide with her husband's revolver gun on May 1, 1915, after arguing with him. The husband, who was sleeping on sleeping pills, did not hear the gunshot.
This incident is well known in the history of science, and it is a scene with a bizarre fate in which speculation, misunderstanding, and black-and-white interpretation wars compete.
Clara Immervar. She is a gifted child who is often compared to Marie Curie. She majored in chemistry at a German university and earned her first doctorate as a woman. In a patriarchal society where women's education is not easy. Clara, who had more intellectual aspirations than anyone else, was struggling to overcome this and pioneer her future. When she finished her doctoral course, she held lectures for women as it was not easy to get a position at the institute due to the glass ceiling.
Then, she fell in love with Fritz Haber. He was a man with a bright brain. Clara felt an intellectual love for Haber. She first met him 10 years ago in dance class, and then they met again and married him. She wanted to be with her husband on his intellectual journey. When Fritz Haber studied thermodynamics and published a book, Clara Immervar collaborated on research, although she appears in a supporting role in the book as a thank-you line.
But how does this tragedy happen?
To understand this, we need to look at her husband Fritz Haber's journey. He is commonly called the man who fed humanity. This is because humans fixed nitrogen for the first time. Our atmosphere contains 80% nitrogen. It literally overflows. But it cannot be fixed artificially. Plants cannot absorb it directly. Root nodule bacteria parasitic on legumes must fix it.
Fritz Haber successfully extracted several drops of ammonium nitrate, or ammonia, by heating hydrogen under high pressure and high temperature. Humans have been artificially fixed to nitrogen, just like root nodule bacteria and lightning. Harbor was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his miracle of 'making bread in the air'.
Later, it succeeded in mass production of ammonia with Bosch. This is called the 'Harbour-Bosch process'. Nitrogen synthetic fertilizers have begun to be produced. Fritz Haber is put on the pig's cushion right away.
In the history of science, the Harbor-Bosch process is classified as one of the revolutions in the history of science. It is said that they have developed nitrogen fertilizers that feed humans. However, the history of science with this bias needs to be re-established from the perspective of agricultural ecology and biology. This is because the Harbor-Bosch process has become a 'nightmare' of capitalism. Hydrogen must be heated to obtain ammonia, and where to obtain hydrogen? It is natural gas. Without natural gas, nitrogen synthesis fertilizers cannot be produced.
The Harbour Bosch process is like the engine of the destructive capitalist farming methods that have enabled single-crop systems, beating fossil fuels into the soil for mass production of calories.
Haber's journey did not stop there. The crop grows well when nitrogen fertilizer is added. But weeds also grow well. Insects and diseases also spread at the same time. Fritz Haber realized he needed chemicals to get rid of weeds and pests. He developed a "pesticide."
Just in time, World War I broke out. Harbor thought that it would be nice to develop this toxic substance he developed into a chemical weapon. He was a patriot. He convinced the German army to use chemical weapons. And the chlorine gas he developed is used in the Allied Forces. It is mankind's first chemical war. The Allied Forces, which drank chlorine gas, died in the agony of twisting limbs. More than 6,000 people died.
The herbicides and pesticides we use today are the products of World War II. Substances that kill humans are now used as a means of war against land and various lives. Later, when the Nazis appeared, Fritz Haber fled the country. However, the toxic gas and chemical war he designed later affected the Auschwitz massacre. The bizarre link of violence was created in which the Jewish poison gas killed the Jews. German war criminals who showed off their abilities throughout World War II appear to have been punished, but German war criminals who were respectfully enshrined in the United States to design today's capitalist farming methods consisting of 'tractor-synthetic fertilizer-pesticide-GMO'.
On May 1, 1915, to commemorate the slaughter of 6,000 people with chlorine gas he had developed, Fritz Haber enjoyed a raucous celebration surrounded by his colleagues. Clara Immervar did not join the party. An argument broke out between the two of them that night. After a while, Clara commits suicide with Fritz Haber's handgun. Printz Harbor, who fell asleep on sleeping pills, did not hear the gunshot. Her young son found her body. The next day, Printz Harbor went back to the battlefield with a casual face.
After her death, it was briefly described as a short story. However, some scientists, especially female scientists, called Clara Immervar again after the 1970s. It has been claimed that her suicide was actually due to anger and guilt at her husband, who transformed science into a means of harming humanity. Clara, a pacifist, was unable to withstand her husband's development of weapons of killing and massacring people. Later, Clara Immervar's name was established in various awards, including the Anti-Nuclear Peace Prize.
The story of "there was a pacifist wife next to Fritz Haber who developed poison gas" would have given many people a dramatic imagination. Later, it was also made into a drama and a movie.
Clara Immervar is being called a figure that should be recalled when the subtext of a scientist who has consistently lectured on women is added to this, including the misfortune of a female chemist whose career ended with marriage, the sadness of an outstanding woman who had no choice but to step down to the position of a housewife and mother in the shadow of her husband who gained global fame and status, and the passion of a scientist who has consistently lectured on women. As a symbol of a pacifist who resisted patriarchy and militarism.
Recently, however, criticism has been raised that Clara Immervar has been 'mythized'. There is no evidence that she was a pacifist anywhere. The sources of the words that she was fed up with her husband who produced toxic gas and
