Most international students in the U.S. are actually faced with financial instability that prevents them from paying their monthly rent if they're a month behind on their salaries. When I was a PhD student, for example, if my RA salary came in at $2,500, I would have to go out for 1,300 one-bedroom dormitories, 150 insurance premiums, 60 telecommunications fees, and live on $1,000 a month, especially since I'm married, which makes it crazy to live on. Even if I'm an international student living alone, it's very hard to live on around $1,000 a month. In a rural college where I can survive by rolling a cheap old used car, gas and insurance are added, so I have to live on $700. When I'm a month or two behind on my salary in this situation, I can't stop crying.

From PI's point of view, if the execution of NIH or NSF federal funds is suspended, the salary of the lab's researchers is immediately pushed back, business trips are suspended, analysis and material costs are suspended, making it impossible to do anything. Private universities with good foundation conditions allow them to endure for several months as a kind of emergency overhead reserve, whether at the college or department level, in preparation for times like this, but rarely more than a year. Eventually, numerous PI's are forced to snoop around in search of private funds and corporate tasks, which is a very bad situation for doctoral students who want to go to academia.

What's more problematic is Podak, which makes it easier to go to the next stage when they get the junior funds they receive in addition to their salary from the lab. The fund has also been suspended, so many Podak could face having to pack and go to another country.

The United States, or more precisely, I don't know why the Trump administration is holding all of the federal R&D funds, but this situation, which seems to be turning off one of the innovation engines that has supported the United States for no reason, is incomprehensible. The R&D budget cut of the Yoon Suk Yeol administration two years ago is very cute compared to this.
