Bong Joon Ho's review of Mickey 17
- It's a movie that's worth watching lightly, and it's less than expected in a heavy way.
Released on Feb. 28. Bong Joon-ho's first movie since Parasite.
I don't really like Bong Joon-ho's unique story line.
Most of them point out contradictions in the system, are reformative and overturn the existing system, but there is no alternative.
Memories of Murder became a masterpiece, and I loved the movie because the story line ended up pointing out the contradictions.
So did Parasite. I really didn't sympathize with Song Kang-ho's stabbing in the back. Instead, everything except that was good, novel, and up to the Academy Award, it was the promotion of national prestige itself. So I decided to watch Mickey 17 as a respect for Bong Joon-ho.
Mickey 17 is the story of a man who is used as a test object for space exploration. Mickey repeats 16 deaths to fulfill his mission, but is reborn as a new body with the memory maintained through human cloning. In this repeated death and rebirth, he contemplates his existence and the meaning of death. In this way, the film minimizes the rejection of death and asks the audience questions to think deeply about.
It was worth watching lightly. Although it is a space science fiction film, it reminded me of the movie "Ireland," which was particularly popular in Korea when it came to cloning human bodies. The difference in Mickey 17 was that when the brain data stored outside was transmitted to another human body, it made us wonder whether the human body was the same person as the previous one.
Science develops, and it deals with and contemplates the most realistic form of eternal life that humans dream of. That was one thing that was new. I thought about it once in a while, but wouldn't other people be similar?
Except for that, it had a simple story line, and I felt that it was worth seeing for time-killing because of the small Bong Joon-ho-style humor in the middle. There are many likes and dislikes, but I didn't waste money and time.
What's regrettable was that the overall movie was less probable. Like the successful women scramble for the main character, who is actually a low profile life. The people blindly follow the leader of the spacecraft even though he is coming out funny. There are no security guards even though there are so many murders in the furnace. There were so many scenes that were inevitable but were less probable.
What was particularly inconvenient was that the political orientation that Bong Joon-ho had previously shown could be seen as a completely American version.
Bong Joon-ho had a bad experience in the U.S. (In my case, I only have good memories.) The sight of a spaceship leader described as complete evil taking over the spaceship through religion, singing hymns and committing evil was rather uncomfortable, let alone humorous, as he mocked the U.S. Christian right in public. And singing hymns some committing bad activities felt like an obvious movie of the American Christian right, which was not funny at all and made me very uncomfortable.
To add more to this, the movie began to be made at the end of 2022 after the election of the Yoon Suk Yeol. And the villain in the movie reminds me of Kim Yoon Suk Yeol and Kim Gun-hee so much? It wasn't particularly inconvenient because doctors don't like Yoon Suk Yeol.
Still, if I were to pick an interesting thing, the way his girlfriend was happy to see Mickey 17 and Mickey 18, which were duplicated, felt like a webtoon setting these days, and it was very new. In addition, the beauty of the video was worth watching. The fact that there were two Asians who were important in the movie.
Bong Joon-ho shot the monster in 2006 and became a completely anti-American film director, and Mickey 17 seems to be the American version of the slightly soft monster "The Host."
