I made another statistic.
You all think the Big Five is amazing, right? Asan Medical Center in Seoul has 2,732 beds and the largest number of specialists with 1,370. Medical revenue in 2022 is 2.31 trillion won.
All hospitals called the Big 5 have medical revenues of more than KRW 1 trillion, and Bundang Seoul National University Hospital, ranked 6th, has surpassed Seoul St. Mary's Hospital in recent statistics.
There are 16 university hospitals in Korea that have more than 1,000 beds. The Big 5 is not the only one with so many beds, and there are many in the non-metropolitan area.
There is an up-down by calculating medical income per specialist, but the Big 5 is not necessarily excellent. New hospitals, Hwasun Chonnam National University, Chilgok Gyeongbuk National University, and Gangneung Asan Hospital are higher in the non-metropolitan area. Of course, there are low places like Jeju National University and Kangwon National University Hospital. Gangbuk Samsung Hospital is a unique situation because its screening income is superior.
If you look at it, it also feels different depending on how high the proportion of labor costs is because the hospital is old.
And if you look at the second graph, you'll see something completely different. It's healthcare revenue per bed. And I can see why hospitals are bent on expanding their beds. And I can see that the hospitals in the metropolitan area, including the Big Five, are going to be much higher. Why is that? That means there are so many expensive patients. And the reason that healthcare revenue per bed goes down in the non-metropolitan area is that the bed capacity drops as it goes down, and when you're diagnosed with a serious disease such as cancer, you move to the metropolitan area and receive outpatient treatment. And that's probably because people who come to hospitals in the metropolitan area have that much economic ability to pay. And I see the regional gap here, too.
To sum up, there are many reasons why the Big 5 is doing so well. In the 1990s, when Asan Medical Center in Seoul and Samsung Medical Center were established, they created a new wind in the hospital community. They have led efforts to improve customer satisfaction and hospital services. The same goes for Severance Hospital and Seoul St. Mary's Hospital. Needless to say, Seoul National University Hospital is a hospital that symbolizes Korea. When patients flocked to the hospital, the hospital would have had to increase beds and hire more doctors to treat them. Large hospitals in Seoul would have no choice but to be exposed to all media and broadcasting. They also led the so-called craze for names.
University hospitals in the non-metropolitan area are probably behind in that trend. However, there must have been a lot of self-destruction when seeing patients leave for the metropolitan area after hearing rumors. Hospitals cannot invest when medical profits decrease. There are no more doctors. With fewer doctors, it is difficult to provide aggressive treatment. Over the course of 20 years, the gap between high-level general hospitals in the metropolitan area and non-metropolitan hospitals has deepened.
Now, the government has created a medical crisis to save essential and local medical care. As you did in the original presidential election pledge, please invest more in regional-based university hospitals to create hospitals that you want to work more than in Seoul. And persuade the people to create an environment where local university hospitals are as good as Seoul so that they can take care of their own health in nearby areas.
Then, naturally, doctors will flock to the local area and the field of essential medical care. The story of Aesop's fable, The Sun and the Wind, is well known. When a strong wind blows to remove a traveler's clothes, the traveler becomes softened. Remember that only the sun's warm sunlight can make a traveler take off his clothes.
