Amazon To Invest $2.75 Billion In AI Startup Anthropic With Largest Venture Ever
Amazon is making the largest outside investment in its 30-year history to gain an edge in the artificial intelligence competition.
The tech giant has said it will spend an additional $2.75 billion supporting Anthropic, a San Francisco-based startup widely seen as a leader in generative artificial intelligence. Claude, the underlying model and chatbot, competes with OpenAI and ChatGPT.
The two companies announced their initial $1.25 billion investment in September, and Amazon said at the time that it would invest up to $4 billion. Wednesday's news is that Amazon raised funds for the second time.
Amazon will retain a minority stake in the company and will not have an Anthropic board seat, the company said. The deal was made at the AI start-up's final valuation of $18.4 billion, the sources said.
Over the past year, Anthropic has made five financing deals worth about $7.3 billion. The company's products compete directly with OpenAI's ChatGPT in both the corporate and consumer worlds and were founded by former OpenAI research executives and employees.
News of Amazon's investment comes weeks after the company launched its latest suite of AI models, Claude 3, which Anthropic says is the fastest and most powerful. The company says the most outstanding performance of its new models outperforms OpenAI's GPT-4 and Google.
Gemini Ultra's evaluation of industry benchmark tests, including knowledge at the undergraduate level, reasoning at the graduate level, and basic mathematics.
"Generative AI is poised to become the most innovative technology of our time, and we believe our strategic collaboration with Anthropic will further enhance the customer experience and look forward to the next step," said Swami Sivasubramanian, Vice President of Data and AI.
Amazon's move is the latest step for cloud providers to spend more to stay ahead of the AI race. And it's the second update to Anthropic's capital structure in a week
