South Korea's net foreign financial assets reportedly topped $1 trillion
Last year's trade surplus was about $50 billion, so it's about 20 times higher
How did you manage to collect so much financial assets?
According to the data, Korea became the first financial asset surplus country since it was similar in 2013
And then I tried to say that I'd built an 11-year surplus to make a trillion dollars...
The trade surplus for 11 years is less than $1 trillion
It's going to be less than half a trillion dollars if we collect a trade surplus for 11 years
So Korea's return on investment has been so good that it has reached $1 trillion?
I don't think so...
How can investments made by Korea be particularly profitable?
Look out for the formula for calculating foreign net financial assets
External net financial assets = Total external financial assets - external debt
External debt refers to foreigners buying Korean government bonds
The amount of Korean stocks bought by foreigners is omitted here
But instead, foreign stocks bought by Koreans are included in calculating Korea's total external financial assets
Anyway, to do it properly, it is fair to exclude the amount of Korean stocks held by foreigners from the above formula
Adjusted net financial assets = Total external financial assets - external debt - Korean stocks held by foreigners
Korean shares held by foreigners stand at approximately $0.5 trillion
Then, the corrected net financial asset is about $0.5 trillion, and if the trade balance accumulated since almost 2013 is multiplied by the appropriate return on investment, this would be about it
