Trump tweeted out harsh words about Bishop Marianne, who was a preacher yesterday. I was a little worried when I saw that, so I asked the chief priest after noon service on Wednesday. "Wouldn't Trump pose a threat to the bishop and the church who preached yesterday?" he said. "No way. If that happens, I will have to go to court." Oh, the U.S. is a country of accusations.
It was good that his answer showed strong support for fellow clergymen. What was even better was that the dialogue did not take into account the "possibility of disadvantages from within the Anglican Communion of America." Most people who would have complained about Bishop Marianne's sermon must have gone to ACNA in the first place. If the Anglican Communion of Korea delivers such a sermon, some vocal elders call the parish the next day. The priest must then leave the church for the next time. Why? For not maintaining neutrality, he should not express any opinion on immigrants nor post ^leftist ^ on Facebook. It is a terrible thing to reveal during the sermon about their suffering lives. (Does this really happen? I didn't want to know.)
If you write it like this, it may seem like it's only a matter of the Korean Anglican Church, but it's not. Among those who shared the sermon yesterday, there were quite a few comments, regardless of denomination, saying, "Why don't we have such pastors in Korea? Why can't we hear these sermons?" and the reason is simple.
Because the congregation doesn't want to.
What would happen if a pastor of a certain church asks us to learn about the suicide rate of LGBTQ people and the poor life of Korean migrant workers from this week, and dreams of becoming a pastor welcoming them? Let's find a list of Korean churches that are safe for LGBTQ people. It is only a single-digit percentage of the total number of churches in Korea. This is the current state of Korean churches. Justice and peace are not welcome.
"That priest insulted Trump, whom I hate. How brave." Yesterday's sermon is not just an episode to be consumed. We should listen to it as a sermon to ourselves.
I take what I'm enjoying for granted, but nothing is natural. I didn't get it from my efforts alone, and I wasn't given it because I was good. If we are aware of these facts and feel grateful for them, we should also have a heart to release our mercy on our 'neighbors'. I have to think about how to welcome people whose rights are restricted by various positions, such as LGBTQ people, the disabled, and migrants, which I have not tried to see so far.
Trump is rude, selfish, and greedy. He doesn't hide it. However, kicking out a devilish Trump doesn't bring justice. In a Marvel movie, the story is complete just by the death of a villain, but in reality, it is achieved when far more people work hard to build a safe fence.
So, everyone, just cheer for your courage and don't stop. You, too, make some noise. Make your own resolute voice against unjust violence. No ridicule, no cynicism, no debate. Say justice. Even if you get hurt while making a fair noise, it's not because of your weakness, but because of the inhumanity of your opponent. Our fight is to show it.
